Pub Adventures with Flynn

On Sunday it wasn't the nicest of days in Pembrokeshire, the wind was blowing a gale and the rain was a driving force bitterly whipping you in the face.

It was a shame that the weather was miserable as we had planned to take Flynn on a trip to Newgale beach, a huge expanse of sand and sea. He has never been up to Newgale before so we thought it would make a nice change of scenery for us all and we knew he'd love racing around playing ball for hours on end!

Instead we decided to take him on a mini, dog friendly pub crawl.

The Sunday lunch at the Jeffreyston Inn in is amazing and we quite often enjoy a lazy Sunday afternoon in front of the fire, Flynn included. He gets so close to the fire that I am surprised he has any eye lashes left!

For a change though we took a drive to the Boars Head in Templeton. I was a little unsure of where Flynn was allowed inside, but when we got there the barmaid welcomed us all into the pub and we sat comfortably by the radiator to the left of the main entrance. Flynn was offered a bowl of water too.
Although we were separate from the main restaurant area, we sat in a cosy area where food is served and we happily spent a good hour or so having a chat whilst Flynn was curled up underneath the radiator.

Next stop was the Wisemans Bridge Inn which overlooks a wonderful pebbly heaven. Admittedly it wasn't looking at it best when we popped by on Sunday!

Again we all had a lovely welcome into the Wisemans Bridge Inn, in fact a black and white collie greeted us as we arrived. We did get the impression that she had been there many times before and was somewhat a permanent resident!

As we settled down to a warm drink, Flynn was having a great time sniffing about and making friends with a King Charles Cavalier who was sat to the side of us. The Cavaliers humans clearly took a shine to Flynn as they let him finish off a few dog chocolate buttons from their treat bag.

I can tell you something, he has mastered the 'I'm hungry' puppy dog eyes down to a tee.

At (almost) 5 months old he weighs 12kg and is growing day by day and dare I say it, becoming a very very handsome lad!

New Woof Property near Carew Castle and Mill

A delightful new dog friendly property has joined our Woof Guide portfolio for 2012.

Meadow Cottage is one of seven barn conversions that sits on the outskirts of Sageston village. It has been well furnished throughout and welcomes two dogs and their family of four to call the cottage home during their dog friendly holiday to Pembrokeshire.

There are many delights on your doorstep from Meadow Cottage, the prominent Carew Castle and Tidal Mill being only a 20 minute walk away.
The circular walk around the Mill is a mile long and very popular with locals, visitors and their dogs all year round. There are fantastic photo opportunities as you walk and I have quite often seen the resident heron stood stock still on the fringes of the water stalking it's prey.

Surrounding the Carew Mill walk, there are also many public footpaths going through the fields that branch off in every direction towards Carew Newton, West Williamston and Milton too.

Perfectly located opposite Carew Castle is the Carew Inn, they have built a reputation for great food and have music and barbeque's on various evenings throughout the Summer. Dogs are welcome in the beer garden, under the marquee and the bar area.

The harbour towns of both Tenby and Saundersfoot are only a short drive away, offering sandy beaches, quaint shops, galleries, pubs and restaurants.

From Sageston you are in a central location to discover so many places of interest. Lawrenny and Garron Pill is a village worth visiting, as is the old fashioned riverside pub at Cresswell Quay along with Bosherston Lily Ponds, Freshwater West, Stackpole Quay and Barafundle Bay.

Great dog friendly property in Tenby

Glenwood House is a very impressive property set in it's own extensive grounds, nestled above the popular harbour town of Tenby.

Sleeping 12, this dog friendly property is a substantial Victorian masterpiece for your family and dogs to call home during your holiday to Pembrokeshire. Tenby with it's four sandy beaches, pubs, restaurants, shops and harbour are all only a short walk away, making Glenwood House a very convenient spot to be based!

I for one truly appreciate the beaches in Tenby out of season, the beaches are your own and the dogs can play to their hearts content for hours on end.

With the nights still dark around 6 in the evening, Flynn and I, Mum and Jed are getting all to familiar with walking along the Tenby beaches in the dark. If it wasn't for the fantastic noses of the dogs, we'd never find the tennis balls!

Tenby's South beach is fairly well lit in the evenings, thanks to the lights from the hotels on the Esplanade. With it being ridiculously mild for January (at the moment), the evenings are really pleasant for walking and we are quite enjoying ourselves playing hunt the ball. Admittedly, it will be nice when we can walk without a torch!

I know it has taken me a little while to show off pictures of my puppy to you, the truth is that I just wanted to keep you all in suspense!

But I am glad to announce that the time has come for me to present my puppy to the world.

The Cart House - Excellent Reviews

It is always fantastic to hear from guests that have enjoyed their holiday in one of our dog friendly properties in Pembrokeshire and the latest review we have received is from a guest that has recently stayed at The Cart House, Nr Newgale with her dog.

First impressions are highly important when you arrive at your holiday property, especially when you have your best friend in toe with tail wagging as he is so pleased to be coming along on holiday with you and not having to stay at home!

You are almost more willing for the dog friendly property to be great for him than you are for yourself!

Becky mentioned when commenting on The Cart House as a cottage overall:

'Your best friend (the four legged variety) has a quick investigation of all the crooks and crannies of a perfectly wonderful and welcoming cottage and promptly settles down as if it's a home from home.'

I think that creates a really warm impression of The Cart House near Newgale and most certainly received the 'paws up' from Becky's best friend too.

There are lovely countryside walks surrounding this dog friendly property and it is close to the beaches at both Newgale and Nolton which any dog would love.

Jed and Flynn

My boys are brilliant together. To be honest I have got to take my hat off to Jedipins, he is so patient with Flynn when we go to visit him at my Mums, especially when puppy persists in chasing him around the kitchen yapping and wanting to play.

Mum and I quite often take Flynn and Jed out together for a walk, last night we had a brisk walk around Tenby's cobbled streets, around Castle Hill and onto North Beach the night before we wandered around Carew Castle and we have on a few occasions had a play on Tenby's South beach too.

Flynn is getting much bigger now, he is turning into a very handsome dog. He knows it too as he cheekily flaunts about the place!

He is the first member of the household to have his Christmas presents bought, wrapped and ready to go under the tree once we have put it up this weekend.

The Christmas tree is going to be another attractive vision for Flynn to explore, with lots of baubles hanging and lights twinkling he will have great fun working out what it is and whether or not it has been put there for him to play with.

Flynn is finding his feet

Today, it is a week since I was surprised by my Mum and Dad with my sheepdog puppy Flynn.

He is as gorgeous as ever and has learnt how to sit in a day. Because I proceed in making a huge fuss over him when he sits, he now does it all the time! I was washing up this morning and all had gone quiet so I called Flynn a few times and waited, but heard nothing. I turn around to find him sat behind me, good as gold and his little tail wagging. Bless him.

Throughout the week I have taken Flynn to see Jed, Jed is the best dog in the world and has the patience of a saint. Any dog that can sit, stiff as a board whilst having a puppy bounce up at him playfully letting out a screech every now and again deserves a medal. Mind you, one curl of the lip from Jed and Flynn dives behind me!

Flynn needs one other injection next week before he is able to mingle with all and sundry, but Jed does accompany him down to the bottom of the road and back to have a stretch of his legs.

The vet gave 'Puppy Jones' (this is what Mum registered Flynn under at the vet as she didn't know what his name was going to be!) a three day worming powder, which we started yesterday. Flynn had a few nibbles of his lunch (complete with wormer) and retreated to his bed in dismay. On his way home from work yesterday he was sick and looked a little peaky for the rest of the evening. This morning he turned his nose up at his breakfast and lunch without even so much as a sniff. His Dad tried mixing a few treats in amongst the dry mix and wormer this afternoon and he prized out every single piece of treat and left the rest! I had to giggle.

My New Arrival...

...Flynn.

I had to leave it a couple of days before telling you as I was too excited to type!

Last Saturday I was given a puppy for Christmas by my Mum and Dad. He is an adorable little tan and white Sheepdog with cute ginger eyebrows and hazy blue eyes.

I am very lucky and it's like I've never been without him.

I don't think I've stopped talking about him yet and the photo's have been passed around the office numerous times already and it's only day three! I will have to post you a photo on here tomorrow though as I forgot to bring the USB lead to take the photo's from the camera.

I have to admit that mornings have been rather eventful in the Jones household over the last couple of days. My regular roles appear to be soaking up puppy pee, rescuing carpet under attack and midnight strolls to the lawn to stretch little legs. And I love every minute of it!

I can't wait until Flynn has his last injection next week so I can take him out for proper walks and introduce him to the most beautiful of places in Pembrokeshire. He already has rural roots having travelled from the mountains in Brecon, so I think he is going to get on just fine.

The vet advised my Mum that if I wanted to take him anywhere to go down to the beach onto the wet sand where the tide had washed the beach clean, so on Sunday Flynn's first trip was to the North beach in Tenby.

He is a working lad that has already been to Carmarthen, Llandeilo and Cardigan in his first three days of working. He happily sets off in the morning with his lunchbox and toys whilst his Dad works hard on the roads and he curls up snug as a bug and observes.

I can assure you that this puppy isn't just for Christmas and there are many happy years ahead.

Children in Need 2011

Jed will be putting on his Pudsey ears on Friday to get into the Children in Need spirit.

Jed is quite evidently a poser, as you can witness from the stream of pictures if you scroll down. There is no denying that he is one good looking dog though. You know what they say, dogs look like their owner!

I think because he has always been first in the queue for a picture, been asked to model for a painting and has his very own fridge magnet, I have always been inclined to dress him up in order to accentuate his charisma.

Jed in the past has been Rudolph on many occasions alongside my pony Trixie at the Christmas Showjumping Event, Tom Jones' dog Daffydd during our home edition of Britain's Got Talent and most recently an unimpressed ghost at our Halloween party.

Children in Need is a great cause which helps so many children across the UK.

To raise money for Children in Need within the Coastal Cottages office this year, we will all be arriving sheepishly in our pajamas, having a Pudsey Bake Sale and enjoying a Tea Party for lunch.

Another great idea that has today been confirmed is that for every booking made this coming Friday 18th November, Coastal Cottages of Pembrokeshire will donate £1 to Children in Need.

Bonfire Night and Dogs

As pretty as they may be, dogs just do not like fireworks. Their loud bangs and explosions just frighten and cause them stress.

Jed is fourteen now and I would have thought that his hearing wouldn't be as hot as it used to be. How very wrong I was. Dad was putting up the balloons for Halloween at the weekend and he kept accidentally bursting them with the pin. With each loud pop Jed dived straight behind the settee and went into hiding!

Talking about Halloween, we had a party for the kids on Sunday (which is why we were putting up balloons). Mum had bought a life size Frankenstein decoration that we hung from the ceiling, spider webs draped everywhere and pictures of bats and portraits of witches on the walls.

Jed hated them. He kept dead eyeing Frankenstein, yet giving the model a very wide berth as he skipped quickly down the hall to pass him. He was very uneasy and cautious wandering the house, not trusting anything in case it moved unexpectedly. It probably didn't help when I sprayed mum's hair bright orange and painted her face black. Bless him.

Decorations have gone now and Jed is back to his normal self.

I will though this weekend be making sure that Jed and Drizzle (my cat) are safely indoors watching a very loud TV, being pampered with treats and toys. Not that Jed has much interest in playing in his old age, he much prefers a cuddle.

My Dog Jed

I never thought the day would come when my dog Jed wouldn't fancy a walk.

Perhaps it's because over the last four years he has become wise to the notion that my walks nowadays are never shorter than at least 6 miles at a time and he has just decided he doesn't fancy trotting aside me for hours.

I think I forget Jed is now 14 years old, I still see him as a puppy.

After much deliberation I have come to the conclusion that yes, it's not that he doesn't feel like going for a leisurely stroll for 20 minutes of an evening, he just doesn't fancy trekking for miles and miles, up and down hills and round and round the countryside for hours on end.

So is it just me he doesn't like walking with? No.

I must admit I was a little smug when mum rang the other day having taken Jed out for a walk, to tell me that he had twice turned on his heels pulling her back in the direction of home too.

Bless him. It is his way of just saying he has had enough. We now take him for short, snappy little walks and when he wants to go home he simply turns around!

What a decisive and admirable dog. Either that or he's just gone incredibly lazy!

Perfect Pembrokeshire

Autumn has suitably arrived in all it's colourful glory. Crisp leaves blanket the landscape leaving the trees baring their branches, the beaches become contentedly deserted and perhaps more regrettably, the nights draw in noticeably earlier.

I do have a sense of yearning for Autumn. I enjoy wandering the woods with the crunch of the leaves under foot or appreciating having the many of our beautiful beaches all to myself and Jed (dog). Autumn for me is quite heavenly actually and I feel that Pembrokeshire is truly showcased at it's best during this settled season. The peaceful scenes you can capture in an instant is something spectacular that will serve you as a lasting memory forever.

If you haven't heard already, Pembrokeshire has again played host to another top flight production, Snow White and the Huntsman starring Kristen Stewart. This time it is Marloes Sands that has been recognised for it's subtle beauty and deceptively expansive bay and has deservedly been cast into the limelight to star in this latest production to accentuate Pembrokeshire's dramatic coastline.

Outstanding recognition has previously been paid to Freshwater West beach (mine and Jed's favourite), when both Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows and the epic Robin Hood came to visit and filmed scenes on the beach in 2010. I was so chuffed for this beautiful beach for being appreciated and admired by others (as well as me and my dog!); not just the once, but twice! Legendary.

A Day Out at Angle Bay

Mum and I packed up the car last Sunday complete with children, Jed (dog) and picnic. We thought we would make the most of the pleasantly surprising sunshine and take a trip to the beach. Cue decision on where to visit...

After much deliberation we decided upon Angle.

The first reason being that generally if we are heading in that direction we more often than not reach the famous (for Harry Potter and Robin Hood) and my favourite Freshwater West and very rarely travel that little bit further to visit Angle and Mum fancied a change. Secondly, Angle is so very handy when you are armed with a buzzing duo (3 and 5 years old) and a dog (very handsome I might add) that is steadily beginning to feel his age and has the persona of a Lord. You simply park up, walk through a gap in the wall and you are stepping on sand.

We had a ball.

Jed spent the whole time wading through the seaweed, then emerging like Loch Ness with it draped all over his coat and making the most of having sticks thrown into the sea by the little ones.

The kids too enjoyed every minute, jumping into the sea as if it was a boiling hot bath, jumping the waves and running around collecting shells for their Mum. A game of frisbee lasted a while, until I found myself in a frisbee dual with mum, which ended with her covered in sand and pulling a muscle in her back!

The picnic was devoured, with Jed eagerly awaiting the kids to drop a crumb which he could happily lap up along with mini chocolate chip muffins. (I know that dogs are not meant to have chocolate but he's 14 now and I can't see it doing him a great deal of harm!).

Sadly, many take our beautiful beaches in Pembrokeshire for granted (including myself) and we forget to appreciate what we have right on our doorstep to enjoy.

For something that doesn't cost a thing, every beach is loved by so many families and their dogs all year round in Pembrokeshire and creates so much opportunity for fun. Priceless.

Pembrokeshire - Third Hiking Destination in the World

The accolades for Pembrokeshire just keep on coming. Our beautiful county is already gushing with pride for having had recognition for it's sandy beaches, wildlife and spectacular scenery in the past and now the Pembrokeshire Coastal Path has been named as one of the greatest hiking trails in the world. And your dog is welcome too!

Last year the Pembrokeshire Coastal Path celebrated it's 40th anniversary and it is outstanding that this amazing recognition of coming third in the top 10 hiking destinations in the world emphasises even more how admired the coastal path still is by locals and visitors from across the world 40 years later.

I am still blown away by the scenery that surrounds me every day. Sadly we had to leave Jed (my dog) behind as he is a little too old for climbing now - though he would still give it a good go, but my mum and I walked from Broad Haven South round to Freshwater East a few weekends ago and it was simply stunning. We were the only set of footprints wandering across the beaches, we did miss the paw prints though. The blue sky and sunshine were upon us and mum spent time picking wild mushrooms growing alongside the path. I hope they weren't magic! If only we had thought to bring our swimming gear - the clear, bright blue sea was calling.

Everyone must witness our beautiful Pembrokeshire wonder and your dog can enjoy it whilst by your side too.

A real treat in a Treehouse

I have attempted to build a tree house before now but I can't say that I have ever slept, or had a holiday to Pembrokeshire in one! An added bonus is that you are more than welcome to bring along your dog too.

Potters Cottage in Wolfscastle has so much to offer aside to being a dog friendly cottage. The Corner at Amroth

If you head from Amroth going eastwards you will leave the Pembrokeshire Coastal Path and join the Carmarthenshire coastline, bringing you towards Pendine and Laugharne further beyond.

A delight for all dogs!

The Old Mill in Llanstadwell is an admirable four storey converted flour mill just 50 yards from the secret Cleddau waterway. This impressive stone, dog friendly property is beautifully renovated and proudly sits in the village of Llanstadwell and makes an ideal retreat during your holiday with your dog to our wondrous county of Pembrokeshire.

Any dog that loves nothing more than splashing about in the water will be spoilt here with only being a walk from the Cleddau, and even the most budding boating enthusiasts can embrace the launching facilities and seasonal pontoon from Hazelbeach.

The Ferry House Inn, which is situated in an idyllic waterside setting not far from The Old Mill welcomes dogs into their bar area, where there is seating and a fantastic array of food is served. You can overlook the Cleddau waterway and passing boats from their outside patio area.

The national cycle network have a cracking track from Neyland Marina which an abundance of dogs and their owners walk every day. The route begins from Neyland Marina and you walk following the path for as many miles as you wish, you could even end up continuing through to Haverfordwest if you fancy making an afternoon of it! I have walked this track many times and always spot something different in the fields, hedgerows and I have never failed in seeing rabbits playing in the grass. A very pretty and rewarding walk.

At Neyland there is a lovely cafe where you can enjoy a light bite and great cup of coffee watching the yachts come and go from the marina. A great spot to sit and enjoy the sun.

An amazing Crufts 2011!

I really enjoyed the four day show at DFS Crufts this year; we met an abundance of lovely people and their dogs that had genuine interest in holidaying with their dog to our beautiful, dog friendly Pembrokeshire County.

We are delighted that from the thousand people that entered our competition to win a FREE dog friendly holiday to Pembrokeshire, yesterday we drew our lucky winner and the dog friendly holiday to a popular self catering property sleeping up to 6 people and welcoming two dogs has been given away to a very happy family!

I hope that you all have had a nose at our Woof Guide creation, Dog Walks of Pembrokeshire guide, that in their hundreds were also given away at the Crufts show, which is a fabulous guide of wondrous walks and beauty spots that are not to be missed during your dog friendly visit to Pembrokeshire.

The team will give you a warm welcome plus loads of information on dog friendly holidays in Pembrokeshire and the invaluable Woof Guide - it's wagtastic!

The Old Bakehouse

The Old Bakehouse is a dog friendly stone cottage which has an array of attractions nearby making for a cosy holiday to Pembrokeshire for all the family.

The Old Bakehouse is one of six outbuildings of which have been renovated into holiday homes all set around a landscaped courtyard of the large Georgian guest house Lamphey Park. Sleeping 5 people along with 2 dogs this dog friendly property really is ideal for a family looking to experience all that is amazing about our Pembrokeshire National Park.

The Old Bakehouse is surrounded by beautiful rolling countryside and only a mile outside of the quaint village of Lamphey.

The dog friendly places to visit are endless from your base at The Old Bakehouse from a touch of history to long sandy beaches and castle walks.

For budding historians be sure to visit Lamphey Bishop's Palace, which is welcoming to dogs and offers you the chance to witness the extensive remains of a lavish country retreat used by the Bishop of St David's dating from the thirteenth to sixteenth centuries.

A pleasant circular walk awaits around the Millpond which surrounds the prominent Pembroke Castle. From the opposite side of the bank to where the castle stands you can really appreciate an alternative view of the castle in all it's splendour, nestled perfectly on the river banks.

If your dogs love the beach then I can name and recommend at least three bays which are all dog friendly all year round and only a short drive from The Old Bakehouse in Lamphey.

To begin, Freshwater East is a wide, sandy beach backed by low dunes with ragged headland surrounding. This is a very popular beach and has a car park directly opposite the little sandy path which leads you down onto the beach. There are a few rocks over the far end of the beach to have an adventure and with the sunken dunes everyone will be kept entertained here.

Barafundle Bay is simply breathtaking, a world class walk. Barafundle is truly one of Pembrokeshire's most beautiful beaches, often described by many as 'the jewel in the crown' and consistently voted the most beautiful beach in Britain. This bay can only be accessed by the stretch of coastal path which begins from the car park at Stackpole Quay, followed by a walk down through the grassy dunes leading to the bay. South of the beach is a fabulous stretch of coastal path leading to Stackpole Head.

Last but by no means is Broad Haven South and the very pretty walk around Bosherston Lily Ponds. Broad Haven South is a brilliant beach, a place my dog and I have many happy memories as we constantly came here when he was a little younger. Broad Haven South is an extremely popular beach for families and their dogs, made even more appealing by the unspoilt walk around the Bosherston Lily Ponds of which leads you to the far end of the beach. This beach is renowned for it's influx of tremendous waves, a fantastic spectacle to watch during the winter. Broad Haven South is one big sandy beach with grassy dunes, rock pools and a cute stream ideal for paddling and throwing the ball in sheltered waters. You'll have fun here.

Rushland, Ludchurch

Deserving of some attention this September is this dog friendly bungalow in Ludchurch, just a short drive from both the beaches at Wiseman's Bridge and Amroth.

Rushland is a beautifully furnished and well decorated property which is obvious to the human eye upon arrival. It's practical style and modern feel create such a warm atmosphere throughout, which I am sure will help to make your dog feel right at home from the moment his paws touch the doorstep.

The dog friendly property itself is host to a large lawn, with a public footpath aside to the garden's bushes called 'Knight's Way' for a morning stroll. This popular lane could be made into a more extensive walk for those keen to explore during the afternoon perhaps.

Internally the property is laid with practical laminate flooring, for those dogs who may need a little more grip the owner has ensured that there are two runners (kept in the garage which guests have access to) that can be put down in the hallway if required. There are rugs placed in variation throughout the property too.

Ludchurch itself is a pretty village and by taking a short car drive for no longer than 10 minutes, would have you reach Wiseman's Bridge bay, which lays on the scenic coastline North of Saundersfoot and leads onto Amroth.

Wisemans Bridge at one time was the stage for rehearsals of the D-Day landings during the Second World War, but I can assure you that these days the setting is much more peaceful! It is a lovely safe haven for all the family and with it's popular beachside pub this area makes the perfect setting for a great sandy day out.

Further along the coastline you reach the long stretch of golden sands at Amroth. Amroth is host to well developed pubs, cafes and shops which are all close by to the beach. Amroth also marks the finish of the Pembrokeshire Coastal Path which begins far North in St Dogmaels, Cardigan.

From Saundersfoot you can embrace the say half a mile walk to Wisemans Bridge, going through two tunnels and passing the beach at Coppet Hall. Saundersfoot itself boasts it's fishing harbour, pubs, restaurants and shops as well as it's long stretch of sandy bay. Definitely a place to sit on the beach and enjoy a warming bag of fish and chips!

Rushland really would make for a lovely family getaway this Autumn. The village in which it sleeps is pleasant and welcoming and yet only a little drive away would bring you to walk along the plentiful sandy beaches and rest in a beachside pub.

And the best part is that you don't have to leave your best friend behind.

Seabrook, Nr Wisemans Bridge

When the children go back to school the dogs just have to come out and play.

Speaking as a mother only yet to the furry kind, as an owner of a dog that enjoys nothing more than skipping along the golden sand and plunging into the rock pools, when the height of the summer season ends and most have returned home, I cannot wait to whisk my dog down to the beach and let him roam free without the worry of him disturbing someones sunbathing or flicking sand in a little girl's sandwich.

Don't get me wrong, I adore the feeling of our beaches being admired and enjoyed by the many who visit Pembrokeshire every year, I as much as the next person love going for a swim off shore followed by a bag of chips and an ice-cream covered in strawberry sauce.

I just feel more content when my dog is swimming alongside me in the sea, there is the religious routine of one chip for me and one chip for him, followed by a long wait at my feet for him to lap up the next drip of his favourite ice-cream for dessert. Oh the memories!

Heading to Pembrokeshire late September into October and beyond is just fantastic when you are bringing your dog along for his well deserved holiday. Everything is so much more appropriate for your dog, whether it be that you are the only people making footprints (and paw prints) in the sand, the many Castle's have resumed to displaying their wintry history and the unspoilt cobbled streets are quieter to wander. There is just that sense of calmness where Pembrokeshire comes to rest after the holidays, it chooses to embrace the peace and quiet with open arms.

I for one love Autumn and it's association with melancholy, the prospect of Winter is on the horizon. Cue the rosy red cheeks as we take a brisk walk across the beaches and headlands at every chance.

Seabrook is a dog friendly property set above Wiseman's Bridge and Amroth sleeping a comfortable six people and one dog.

Being only a 20 minute walk from the dog friendly beach (all year round) at Wiseman's Bridge and it's welcoming beach side pub, Seabrook is a conveniently located property for the larger family and a dog looking for a stroll and a dip in the sea straight from the doorstep.

Heading in the opposite direction from Wiseman's Bridge you will discover the long and sandy beach at Amroth, any dog restrictions here are lifted as from the 30th September (roll on the empty beach) so your dog is free to chase ball time and time again. Amroth also boasts a selection of pubs, restaurants and seafront shops to embrace whilst you are visiting.

You could take a short drive from Wiseman's Bridge to Saundersfoot, or ditch the wheels and embrace the popular half mile walk from Wiseman's Bridge to the port at Saundersfoot. This walk is great for all walks of life as it is pretty flat, taking you through two tunnels and past the beach at Coppet Hall.

Saundersfoot itself is a pretty harbour town hosting both Saundersfoot Bay and The Glen beach. At low tide you can walk between the two beaches and up and around the harbour. Saundersfoot is where I quite enjoy demolishing a bag of chips sitting on the sand admiring the views from the bay.

Holidaying with your best friend...

I don't think you can ever beat it - going on holiday with your best friend. Isn't that what holidays are all about?

For me, in the back seat of the car there is always room for another and if they have fur, four legs and a wagging tail all the better!

Same goes for the Newton family and their beloved Lucy. A treasured companion that didn't fancy being left at home this holiday, so joined her humans on a dog friendly holiday to 1 Brynawel in Dinas Cross, Pembrokeshire.

Meet Lucy...

It is always a pleasure hearing about our guests visits to Pembrokeshire and when their accompanying four legged friends enjoy the holiday just as much (if not more) than the humans, I am so very proud to hear of their experiences that I have to share their stories and photo diaries with everyone.

1 Brynawel is a semi-detached Victorian house set on the outskirts of the very popular village of Dinas. The dog friendly property boasts superb views with Mynydd Dinas to the rear with the sea and bay to the front, offering comfortable and cosy accommodation for it's guests all year round. 1 Brynawel is within walking distance of Aberbach Bay and the coastal path (which Lucy is modelling here!).

Mike Newton has very kindly described Lucy's holiday in much detail for me, talking of the variation in walks that Lucy enjoyed everyday and the abundance of admiration Lucy received by many throughout her holiday.

In his own words...

'Lucy had a walk everyday. We did the woods at Cwm Gwaun and had a pint at The Dyffryn Arms (aka Bessie's Pub) and met Bessie (she has been there for 60 years).'

Just to add a little insight here on The Dyffryn Arms at Pontfaen, this deservedly celebrated, little basic pub has been kept by Bessie Davies where she still serves beer with a jug from the barrel. It has been voted one of Wales' top attractions - you never know who you will meet here!

'A nice walk from the bridge that crosses the estuary near Newport where the bird watchers are, then along the the bank towards the Parrog and golf club at Newport.'

'Park near Penwaun and and take the path to Felindre for a great meal at The Salutation Inn (host John excellent), it rained a bit and let Lucy come into the bar where she curled up in the corner and slept but woke to the smell of cooked liver!!

The pathway from Penwaun is being upgraded and the big mud patches are going, lovely wooded walk with the river Nevern to your right all the way.'

'Also did Dinas Head, stopped again at The Old Sailor for lunch with lots of admiration for Lucy.'

'Parrog to Aberfforest marine walk is also lovely as well as the cove before it, you can get to the main road through a lovely wooded glade with a rambling stream going all the way to the stream.'

'It was a great holiday especially for Lucy, she just did not want to come out of the sea or come home.'

I was so very appreciative of Mike's words, but as if the above wasn't fantastic enough, he continued and perfectly finished up with the following...

'Also I think 1 Brynawel does not get the visitors it deserves, yes it is on the main road but still has an enclosed garden, the house itself is comfy, clean and has everything you need.

From the doorstep you have access of about a 10 minute walk to Aberbach Bay...

...Dinas shops and obviously the coastal path or go down the lane to the hill behind.

We have been coming to Pembrokeshire for 7 years now, Penwaun was the first house we had from you and have stayed their many times.

Bringing your best friend on holiday - Lucy makes you have a very different type of break.

We must have walked over 30 miles with her that week and we never got tired of the amazing scenery, the lovely people and the stress-free feeling that this area has.'

Doggy Paradise really does exist!

It is true, a dog's paradise really does exist. The three dog friendly properties within a terrace of barn conversions near Carmarthen really do offer an array of surprises that any dog would be over the moon to discover!

Forest View Cottages, Nantglas, Ty Coedwig and Ty Dyffryn are set within the owners' 35 acres of farm and parkland, situated at the bottom of a valley on the edge of the extensive Brechfa Forest. It even sounds amazing doesn't it?

Brechfa Forest truly inhabits some of the most spectacular scenery and views in Carmarthenshire, with it's myriad of footpaths to explore it makes it an ideal location for lovely walks with your dog. It is home to an abundance of wildlife and ancient woodland covering the steep slopes and riverbanks. No wonder the sublime setting is so popular with so many visitors wanting to explore and discover it's unspoilt nature.

Each of the dog friendly properties have been individually and uniquely designed with retained beams, all offering a comfortable and really special place to holiday with your dog. Outside each property you have your very own paved patio and landscaped communal area, which makes the perfect setting for an evening barbecue, not forgetting a sausage or two for your best friend.

Nantglas is the larger of the properties sleeping 6, with both Ty Coedwig and Ty Dyffryn sleeping 4.

As everyone appreciates, bringing your dog on holiday naturally requires responsibility and planning. As being a responsible dog owner is already in the bag, let's get to the fun bit, planning where to walk!

Along most of the trails within Brechfa Forest your dog is more than welcome to join you as the majority are open access, just so long as they are kept under control at all times during the excitement of your exploration.

Abergorlech is a delightful trail requiring moderate ability, following the River Gorlech along forestry roads before crossing a small bridge onto a footpath and climbing up hill through mature mixed broad leaf and coniferous woodland.

The walk has both short and long distance routes, which are complemented by an ever-changing woodland environment. The picnic area is the trails starting point and is also an ideal place in which to leave your car.

The trail is 2 miles long and would take you around 1 1/2 hours to complete.

To state the obvious, please make sure that suitable footwear is worn by all clumsy humans as the trails can become slippery in adverse weather conditions!

A little drive from the Forest View Cottages to Pembrey will be sure to tire even the most energetic greyhound! Cefn Sidan is an 8 mile long beach in Pembrey Country Park edged by a belt of golden sand dunes. There are clear panoramic views across Carmarthen Bay and the Gower coastline.

A quick mention as well to the Millennium Coastal Park which occupies around 10 miles of coastline on the Burry Estuary. The park offers superb views along it's length of the Gower Peninsula. One of it's many features is the continuous traffic-free cycle/footpath.

There really is plenty to keep the whole family occupied, so much so a week simply wouldn't be enough!

Woodland rambles and discovering Pembrokeshire history

I always like to bring dog friendly properties to the attention of my readers, as I really believe that using a little local knowledge can really go a long way, helping to emphasise details such as the walks, beaches and attractions nearby that all visitors love to embrace during their stay in Pembrokeshire.

For today, I would love to explore the delights and history of Nevern, a beauty spot full of enchanting woodland, an arched river bridge and an early Norman church.

Coed Cadw Cottage and it's adjoining Farmhouse are nestled within the superb Nevern Valley just outside the village of Felindre Farchog, and is an ideal location for family (including the dogs!) or friends sharing a desirable rural position surrounded by fields and an abundance of wildlife. This natural position in which the properties inhabit offers a fantastic opportunity to explore the local area. The cottage is great for two families and for larger parties the secure, concealed connecting door can be opened on request, making it a lovely space to share.

This natural and unspoilt position in which the properties inhabit provide ample opportunities to explore and admire the local area.

From the properties, a walk following a woodland track from Nevern will lead into Felindre Farchog and it's resident Salutation Inn. Dogs are welcome in the bar area at the Salutation Inn we you can enjoy drinks and snacks. The track is around 1.5 miles and so makes for a pleasant stroll of an evening.

If you wanted to proceed on from Felindre Farchog for a longer walk, you can embrace the footpath at the top of the hill and follow on to reach Pentre Ifan and it's historic burial chamber.

Pentre Ifan burial chamber lies on the slopes of the Preselli Mountains and is reputed to be one of the best examples of an early Neolithic tomb in the UK.

The pleasant walk around the riverside hamlet in Nevern makes for an enjoyable 3 mile stint, which takes you to the church of St Brynach and all it's history, passing through an abundance of unspoilt countryside. One of the ancient yew trees within the churchyard grounds is known as 'the bleeding yew' because blood red sap oozes out of a broken branch. It is said that it will continue to do so until a Welshman re-occupies the castle on the hill above.

Newport would be your nearest town standing at the mouth of the river Nevern. Newport itself is home to local cafes, pubs and restaurants. Fronlas Cafe in Newport is welcoming to dogs and offers a fantastic homemade menu for the humans.

If you fancy a day or two exploring the beaches, then Newport offers both Newport Sands and Newport Parrog to explore. At low tide you can venture from Newport Sands across the estuary to Newport Parrog, and the walk around the river bank through a bird sanctuary to the road bridge crossing is always enjoyable.

Carn Ingli Mountain (Angel Mountain or Hill of the Angels) presents spectacular views across Newport and out onto Cardigan Bay. Maybe not for the faint hearted, but once you have made it to the top of the hill it really does live up to it's name of Angel Mountain.

Pembrokeshire in all it's sunshine

What a fantastic few weeks we have had down in Pembrokeshire, the sun has certainly had his hat on. I suppose though for the dogs the heat isn't so great, Jed has been clipped again.

Although I can't seem to adapt to him looking like a staffie, I do understand how much cooler it is for him. Mum loves it as there isn't half the hair caught up in the carpets!

I took Jed down to the estuary on Sunday night, it is only around a half hour walk from mum and dad in Cosheston. I waited though until about 8 in the evening after I had filled my face with a BBQ at mums to take him down, it was so much cooler and the tide was right up to the shore. Jed swam solidly for around an hour, he never gets tired of the water.

Walking along the shoreline late evening must be the best time of the day during the summer for a dip. Everything feels so calm, cool and the colours in the skies are something else. But when you turn around to the sight of two Irish Wolfhounds bounding towards you, you almost wonder whether you have arrived at Jurassic Park. They were massive and made Jed look like a Chihuahua!

These paws are made for walking...

Spring has certainly sprung when an array of rainbow coloured flowers fill the river banks and hedgerows, you wake up to the sweet singing of birds in the trees and the evenings are forever lasting. Roll on the summer sun as the warm rays shine over Pembrokeshire enhancing the abundance of the County's unspoilt coastal beauty. Pembrokeshire truly is a place for everyone to visit and celebrate each passing season is style.

Amroth beach is a sandy bay with a pebble bank above the tide line, it is said here that at extremely low tide that the stumps and trunks of an ancient submerged forest can be seen here. This one would be great for my Jed - Granston House in Abermawr. He loves the water whatever the weather and so being so close to the beach would be perfect all year round!

Granston House is a dog friendly property in Abermawr less than a mile away from it's impressive and large bay. Think of the morning strolls and late afternoon wanders you and your dog could enjoy day after day. The fresh Pembrokeshire air in the lungs and a stretch of the legs to burn off breakfast!

Sleeping four people plus your one dog who's been lucky enough to come along with you, Granston House makes for a pleasant and peaceful retreat for the whole family during your time exploring Pembrokeshire.

A short distance from Granston House will take you to join the stretch of Pembrokeshire Coastal Path between Abermawr and Abercastle. This section of the coastal path is around 3 miles, ideal for a breath of fresh air for an hour or two!

St David's is surrounded by spectacular coastal scenery renowned for it's unspoilt beauty. Whilst visiting this area take the time to discover Whitesands, one of the many beautiful beaches in the area too.

Granston House really couldn't be any closer to a fantastic and intriguing bay for those dogs who love splashing around in the water and is nearby to many stunning places in Pembrokeshire.

Yesterday was a gorgeous day in Pembrokeshire. The sun was shining the sky was a blanket of blue and it was wonderfully mild.

Wanting to make the most of the day, I cycled to Jed to take him out for an hour or two. If Carew Mill has no water when I pass, it means that the tide is in when I get to Cosheston and head down onto the Cleddau Estuary. This was the case yesterday, so off we went.

A white New Year...

Snow. I think it's probably the topic of pretty much everyone's conversation at the moment isn't it, it's all about the white stuff. Pembrokeshire was host to a fair blanket...

Jed absolutely loves the snow. For a V.I.P (very important pet) that's getting on a little you would never think that he was a day over 5. His Spaniel eagerness and Collie energy create a cracking, youthful mix. His black, white and spotty outfit looks even prettier against a snowy white back drop.

I love to walk and naturally Jed does too, which of course doesn't change when it snows. Carew Castle looked stunning as we walked last Sunday morning.

It is in snowy circumstances such as these that you come to realise that a more intense training regime would have come in handy when he was a puppy. It is my fault entirely that Jed has a habit of pulling whilst he is on the lead, which mixed with slushy snow and clumps of ice creates a wholesome recipe for unfortunate disaster. I really did struggle taking him for 'tats' on the lead, as in all honesty I could have quite easily came crashing down and kissed the pavement several times over. There was me taking step by little, careful step and Jed charging forward slipping and sliding like Bambi. No fear that's the trouble!

Mum was quite right though. Whilst I was giggling at Jed being a twit, Mum offered a sensible head in saying that a nasty slip or slide for Jed could potentially be extremely dangerous for him too at his mature age, let alone me. I hadn't really thought of it like that. I just saw him having the time of his life, rolling around in the crunch and catching snowballs that it just didn't occurred to me.

Does your dog do that? Catch whopping great big snowballs? Jed is terrible. He takes it in whole then shakes is head as the icy clumps slide down and settle in his belly. You've got to laugh.

The majority of the snow has disappeared in Pembrokeshire now and turned into rain. You may be lucky in spotting the odd patch of white every now and then hidden in the hedge, but I think our spell has reluctantly come to an end.

September sunshine conquers...

What lovely weather appeared over the weekend just gone, summer has made an appearance at last! September is a fairly reliable month when it comes to the sun shining as far as I can remember - it doesn't preach to be glorious like July and August and then disappoint us all by raining. September just seems to enlighten us all by releasing the rays, bombarding us with clear blue skies making us all smile after a dismal so called summer. I am very much a fan of September.

Saturday was glorious. It was so warm and sunny which made for a great day to explore Willowcot Cottage in Talbenny. I never knew how much I would miss my pooch when I finally flew the nest and moved in with my fiance. Yep, it's true I miss him like mad.

I think it is probably because he would lie outside my bedroom door every morning whining until I gave in a let him in my bedroom for a snooze before breakfast, then following me around like my shadow whilst brushing my teeth and then sharing my toast and cereal before I head out for work. It all seems very strange with him not being there.

Of course I visit him as much as humanly possible, take him out for long walks in the sun, wind and rain, pamper, play and adore him as always...I think we must have a date with Freshwater West beach sometime this week. We don't seem to have visited our favourite beach much lately. Yes I think I will do that - good idea Natters.

I thought today of typing away as I seem to have slipped out of my routine to report to you all on a kind of regular basis, for no other apparent reason other than the weeks seem to be flying by like crazy and I'm a busy little bee...though from now on I endeavor to make time.

Here now is a great chance for me to throw a few details into the mix in regards to a sweet property within a pleasant little place known as Dinas.

From your dog friendly property take a stroll and discover the unspoilt beauty of the Pembrokeshire Coastal Path leading you to explore the delights of Aberbach Bay - all within walking distance from your property. The stretch between Fishguard Bay and Newport How cool is that?

Not forgetting the short drive taking you to unwind and relax amongst the jagged coves of Pwllgwaelod and Cwm yr Eglwys, both perfect for wind in the fur and sand between the paws.

And yes still there is more to entice you to visit Pembrokeshire and 1 Brynawel, with Fishguard Harbour and Newport town, Sands and Parrog all within a close drive. Plentiful pubs, restaurants, shops, sands and sea await you in either direction - I could seriously type away for hours...but that would surely just get boring!

It is always best on booking to have a chat with a human on the other end of the phone - our reservations team's knowledge of Pembrokeshire is simply priceless, so I say make the most of it. I love to talk, maybe a little bit too much sometimes but I don't see that as a flaw.

Wet doggie heaven!

Any pooch that loves nothing more than taking a dive into the Pembrokeshire waters will be adventure bound at Swn y Mor in Pwllgwaelod. Recently Coastal has received some great comments in regards to this property that I wanted to throw out there and share with you all. (Don't forget to tell your pooch)...

'Peter and I absolutely loved the holiday cottage we stayed on for numerous reasons.

We loved the 'QUIRKINESS' of the wooden chalet.

We loved the beach literally being a hop and a skip from the beach as you said.

We loved the walks all close by.

The garden was great for the dogs...especially the bunnies!!!

The chalet was ideal for the wet dogs being on the beach, morning, noon and night. no carpets!

The log fire was so cosy on the wet nights too.

We really couldn't fault it at all.

Neither of us had been to Pembrokeshire before and would most certainly go back soon, hoping to book this same place again if we can next year sometime.

We would also highly recommend this place to any dog loving friends of ours too'.

As Summer and Sunshine approaches...

So yes, as the warm weather descended on Pembrokeshire recently, my pooch was getting ridiculously hot all day every day and therefore had to be shaved for his own sanity.

As you can tell, since Monday I have had a chance to calm down and think realistically about my beloved having been scalped. I guess my dad was right in bringing him to the pooch parlour for a little cut, but boy was it one big shock when I saw him for the first time! One of the biggest shockers was his tail once long, fluffy and decorative - turned thin, whippy and rat like.

Jed is now around 13 and this is the very first year that the decision has been made to relieve him of his fur coat, but I wonder how many humans make it an annual outing? I suppose it does really make sense doesn't it?

Imagine a Border Collie... Now think Staffie...Does that have any affect?!

The sun is shining again here in Pembrokeshire today which, when I am working from our South County office in Tenby always prompts a long walk down to the Harbour and beach at lunch. I think tonight I will venture into the outdoors and bring Jed to Carew Castle and take the walk around the Mill - though I will walk from Cosheston on the back lane to Milton then onto Carew. Takes me around 2 hours to complete but it is a lovely walk, especially when the tide is in.

Oh gosh, then I may even pop into Carew Inn across the road to sit in the same beer garden as Russell Crowe himself only a few days before! At the moment Freshwater West beach, which is a long stretch of golden sand, blue sea and plentiful sand dunes and dog friendly ALL YEAR ROUND (Jed's favourite) is host to the new Robyn Hood epic.

The Crowe man himself along with a huge cast is therefore down in Pembrokeshire at the moment shooting a few takes down Fresh Water. Russell then only goes and pops in for some grub and a few beers at Carew Inn on Sunday evening!! Must have been his day off...

If your little furry friend is looking up at you with those puppy dog eyes, lying with his head in his paws looking ridiculously sorry for himself and huffing every time you leave the room...maybe it is time to whisk him away on a dog friendly holiday.

Humans tend to shout from the rooftops when they need to pack their bags and get away from the stresses and strains of everyday life until somebody actually starts listening, but little old four legs in the corner can't really express himself in the same way. Well I suppose he could take up barking in that sorrowful high pitched tone but let's face it, we would probably write it off as threatening the poor old postman...yet again!

Let's think Pembrokeshire...sandy and golden beaches, bright blue seas, wonderful woodland and plentiful headland, intriguing coastline, picturesque harbour's, quaint towns and valleys, awesome adventure...need the list really have to go on?! Actually just for the record I have put in a strong request for glorious sunshine this summer too, so there is another to add.

Ok, so we have your destination confirmed as popular dog friendly Pembrokeshire, but I am guessing that you really do now need a place to rest your head and call home for the week or two - anybody would have thought I had this rehearsed!

I would like to bring to your attention a detached property set off the main road in Newport, North Pembrokeshire, Curlew Cottage. Spiffing Say for Step In, Abermawr

Gosh what a marvellous weekend has just passed yet again, I am getting highly used to waking up to glorious sunshine...please don't let it disappear!

At the moment, well since the end of February really Jed (my furry pooch) and I have been intensely training for the Pembrokeshire Dawn Walk which will challenge participants to a 26 mile walk on Sunday 17th May. Jed has never been happier, an abundance of walks lasting for a minimum of four hours is naturally any dog's heaven. Though he is getting on a little now at 12, but he is as bouncing as ever and boy would he throw one big wobbly if I left him at home! Jed won't be partaking in the actual Pembrokeshire dawn walk as I think the 26 miles would appear a little too much for his little spotty paws and consists of a few main roads, though I am sure he would strongly disagree if he heard that comment. The route that I have been taking for a few months now leads around the pleasant circular walk at Carew Castle and Tidal Mill that I highly recommend being one of Jed's famous favourite's!

So after having completed my little update to you on Natalie's world, I will now crack on to report a few comments that have recently been made for Step In, Abermawr that sounds promising for the four legged friend in the family.

A previous client that stayed with The Woof Guide at Step In in April noted the following comments from a doggie perspective:

'Good that the sitting out area was private and dog proof - it caught the sun at the right time of the day.'

'Excellent for dog walking. Woodland, quiet lanes and beaches. Wore the dog out' (when commenting on the location of the cottage).

Aberm awr Bay is remote beach that is dog friendly all year round. A combination of golden sand and pebble bank make Abermawr Bay a pleasant rural location for plentiful walks during your stay.

The nearest town to Abermawr would be the pleasantries awaiting your visit at Fishguard, explore the harbour, quaint town and Lower Fishguard beach.

Awelfan - So much adventure...

If another day you fancy a spin in the car, a short, scenic drive from Square and Compass will bring you into St David's, famous for being a unique and intriguing city with it's magnificently grand Cathedral, set in the heart of some of the most outstanding coastal beauty in Europe.

So you see, when placing yourself in such a fantastically convenient location such as Square and Compass in Pembrokeshire, you have so many doggie wonders right on your doorstep for you to seek at ease during your stay in Awelfan.

Upon leaving the property you can head for the sand and sea of Wiseman's Bridge Bay, a peaceful warming bay that has been silenced considerably since the beach having been used to stage the practice of the D-Day landings during the Second World War. An enchanting bay which embraces many dogs and their humans all year round and most definitely worthy of your pooches visit. Paddle in the wash, swim for the ball and dig holes enthusiastically in the golden sand. Pawfect...

No long, evening stroll with the sand between your paws and toes would be complete without a stop at the local Inn to soak up the sunshine, admire the coast and breathe in our fresh Pembrokeshire sea air, which is what makes The Wiseman's Bridge Inn the perfect setting for coastal bliss. Relax in the dining room or sit with your feet up in the garden which extends right down to the golden bay...I know, cue warm sunny evening and red skies, you wouldn't want to leave.

Crufting Mania!

So there we have it, another dabble at Crufts has been and gone yet again, but have left all our team feeling so very very pleased with having received such a terrific response and interest towards The Woof Guide which can never ever be a bad thing. I think it may have had something to do with Heidi from Paw Plunger joining the team and offering a help in hand for a little while...!

It did take a few days after the show for Sue, Fran and Sarah W to recover, their poor little feet were throbbing! I am still convinced it was due to having partied hard, drinking a few too many bottles of wine and scoffing too many chocolate digestive biscuits...but I was proved wrong as they religiously followed one jam packed itinerary...

Up at 6.30 (Fran being the only exception) to be showered and down to breakfast by 7, at the show for 8 and chatting madly to all the doggie crazy people until at least 18.00. They did re fuel by whopping down a big juicy steak previous to bed at 9 ish, which unfortunately though meant no Johnathan Ross for Sue on Friday night!

All the same, I would just like to say congrats to the three musketeers and well done for all your hard work over the 5 days which I'm sure bought out the lovely Labrador in you for the majority, but at times revealed the snap of a yappy Jack Russell.

Crufts 2009

Good Morning all. It only seems like yesterday that I had only been with Coastal Cottages for a few months and before I knew it they had me packing my bags to head off to Birmingham to exhibit The Woof Guide and our dog friendly holidays at Crufts 2008. Of this, I could not complain...
Now, I turn around and here we are a year later and it is that time of the year yet again. Just where does the time go?
Sadly, I am unable to attend Crufts this year, but I am delighted to reveal that we have our 3 musketeers, Sarah W, Sue and Fran going along instead to meet you all and enjoy a chat over a nice cup of tea and chocolate biccie.
Fran has packed as though she is off around the world for 80 days and has packed enough snacks and pop to have emptied Tesco, Sarah W has bruised her eye having had an argument with a very angry ironing board this morning and Sue, well Sue is nowhere to be seen just yet. So all in all, the morning of their departure is going as smoothly as ever!
Crufts, the world's largest dog show is proud to 'explore, discover and enjoy the wonderful world of dogs'. Last year I was able to experience it all first hand and witness so many new breeds of dogs that I never knew even existed!
This year is rather exciting for us, as Crufts this year brings the launch of our 'Dog Walks of Pembrokeshire with Bob the Dog' booklet which includes some of our most beautiful dog friendly walks within Pembrokeshire. Our booklet gives a terrific insight and description of each walk which are paired with superb photographs of the varying locations. A handy size to pop into your handbag or rucksack and have a flick through when you have 5 minutes. Well worth the read...
So, If you are planning to take a trip to Crufts this year then do pop along and say 'hello' to the troublesome three (only joking) that are representing our Woof Guide and Coastal Cottages team this year at Crufts. You never know if your lucky, you may even win a dog friendly holiday!

Revealing Rivendell

As we enter the Spring, I get a little excited. I can't help but think of the long Summer evenings ideal for long strolls followed by a refreshing drink at the local. Granted, I may be a little premature in allowing my thought pattern to think that far ahead, but once January has passed that is all I can seem to think about and I know my pooch is thinking the same. We no longer have to run around the block to be in by 16.00 as it turns pitch black or wait until gone 08.00 in the morning to head for a spin down to the beach.

On holiday in Pembrokeshire sounds great without thinking about it too much, but when you are able to bring your best friend on holiday and stay with your friends too, doesn't it make it sound perfect?

Snow is Falling...

I have come to the conclusion that my dog loves the white snow more than myself. On Tuesday morning when we had our first snowfall my dog was the first to make his paw prints in the snow whilst Drizzle (my cat) watched reluctantly from the kitchen.
As snow only comes around for us in Pembrokeshire once in a blue moon, we tend to get very excited when we wake up and the white fairies have sparkled their dust over the land, snow looks so pretty when unspoilt. I stress 'when unspoilt' as it can get to look rather dirty once a few cars and lorries have turned it to a horrible dirty brown at the side of the road.
Back to Jed and Drizzle. Jed is a maniac in the snow, dancing around the garden letting out the occasional 'this is so much fun' bark and chasing Drizzle around in circles.
Drizzle has never actually seen snow before and so for her this is proved to be one terrifying experience. You can almost see the clogs working behind her little eyes, 'What the devil is all that white fluffy stuff covering my scratching post?' It was so funny to watch though, as Drizzle was doing her very best to avoid every inch of the white stuff, Jed comes bounding along, Drizzle scarpers and Jed begins tormenting her in the bushes! You would have thought that that would have resolved her fear (or made it ten times worse), but as the snow returns this morning, Drizzle took one look and skips back into the house. I suppose it must feel like walking on water to cats really.
And that's another thing, do your dogs always feel the need to eat snow? Jed is terrible. It is fun throwing snowballs at him though and watching him dive to catch it, but is eating snow really good for our best friend?
After doing a little research this afternoon, there is such a term known as 'snow poisoning'. This is simply when a dog that is dying of thirst, is surrounded by snow. The problem is that eating the snow doesn't equal drinking water, not by a long stretch! When you think about it, snow melts down to very little water and so wouldn't provide our pooch with hardly any liquid at all. I suppose that the moral of that story, is always make sure a nice bowl of water is on hand!
I hope you are all enjoying the snow as much as Jed and I, taking plenty of snaps of the white blanket covering the countryside, as we never knwo when it shall return!

Do you walk your dog when it's raining?

I came into work this morning and what a great surprise. It was gloomy, grey and raining. The clouds looking like they were ready to let rip a massive quantity of rain drops, I suppose you could compare them to a pregnant lady waiting to drop. Oh joy!

The state of the weather then sparked my thoughts to the following topic, 'How many people actually still take their dog for a walk even if it was raining?'

Now I'm not talking drizzle (that's the name of my cat too),or light, misty rain, I mean absolutely tipping it down, soaking wet rain where you only have to step onto your doorstep and your hair look as though you have just jumped out of the shower. My dog, the gorgeous Jed only has to hear it raining and think, 'Great, that's my walk out of the window this morning!'

But when you think about it, your cat is the mostly likely domestic pet to hide inside out of the rain because they don't like water.

Dogs, given half a chance bound out of the door, roll in the grass and shake as the tiptoe back into the kitchen pleased with themselves that you now have to chase them around in circles to wipe their paws so they don't get mud on the cream carpets! You can tell I'm talking from experience can't you?!

But Jed knows the drill. Out he trots for a wee and a breath of fresh air, door opens and in he treads and stands like a very good, well trained boy as I wipe him over with his doggie towel. Not likely! Jed gets as far as the door opening and rockets straight into the living room, where he knows that mum has just that second put the hoover away. Typical , but he does make me giggle. As he has got older his character just gets funnier and funnier. He is one wise fella!

I think he is teaching my little cat a few tricks too...

Enter Drizzle. A fairly small, slight pussycat with patterns of grey, brown and black all over, with a dove white belly and pricked ears. Drizzle, such a pretty, friendly fur ball, gracefully parading around her home ready to spot the next sucker munching on something tasty. Of course, Jed has beaten her to it and has already claimed the prime seat in the house awaiting any falling crumbs for him to lap up. Well, so he believes, until...

Drizzle. This little madam isn't fazed by Jed's presence as she has figured out that as she is so small she can afford to launch herself onto the chair and sit on the lap of her victim, getting closer than the spotty nosed pooch. But somehow Jed's pitiful, sorry eyes always wins the choccie biscuit!

Honestly, in the mornings I am lucky if I get to munch half of my piece of toast because I am surrounded by the zoo! But our home would be lost without them, they carry such a respected presence.

Freshwater West Beach, Pembrokeshire

I always find that taking my pooch for a trip down the beach during the Winter months is so much more enjoyable than battling with the crowds during the height of the Summer season. Of course I have no objection whatsoever with the many people that visit Pembrokeshire in the Summer it's just that you can find your dog will never get any peace.

My dog will always manage to find the man with the camera trying to take a 'beach' shot of his little children in the sea. In swoops Jed ball in mouth, tail wagging, ears pricked and a spring in his step as he bounds into the sea. Cue glare from Dad.

But that just wouldn't happen in the Winter. I know it does sound like I may be stating the obvious here, but the only other people you will come across, are other lovely people wanting some peace and quiet to let their dogs run wild along the sand and splashing in the sea and the occasional surfer dude, but they just please themselves.

I recently took Jed down to his favourite beach, Freshwater West and it was as unspoilt and as refreshing as ever. Freshwater West is a fantastic beach to visit all year round for dogs, as it carries no horrible restrictions and has a long stretch of golden sand, plenty of sand dunes, rock pools and a clean sea for a doggie dip. If you are coming to Pembrokeshire with Coastal, then I would most certainly recommend this beach to visit. For me, having a water-loving dog at home allows me to venture to the beach everyday if I liked and knew that my dog would be absolutely delighted to accompany me.

There is nothing like wrapping up cosy warm as you feel the brisk air manage to catch only your face as you gently stroll across soft sand, splashing your wellies in the sea and watching your four legged friend have the time of his life.

A dog is for life, not just for Christmas

I thought that it would be quite appropriate today to turn our attention to the slogan 'A dog is for life not just for Christmas.'

This slogan has more truth and honesty in 9 words than a glitzy magazine has from cover to cover. The UK's National Canine Defence League really excelled themselves when they introduced this back in 1978 as it is widely quoted and respected. Widely quoted yes, but respected? I am not so sure...

I think people are still forgetting that cute little puppies get bigger, grow more hair and mature into a handsome dog, and with the dog's maturity the love and attention from their owners begins to fade. The little puppy that their children craved when they were little has suddenly become 'not so cute' and 'not so wanted'.

It is such a shame, I love my dog just as much, if not more now that he has matured than ever before, and right from a puppy he has remained a permanent fixture, loved and cared for, our family pet.

But when you think about it, that may be one of the top 3 excuses for pets becoming abandoned, but it certainly isn't all of them. The dog ruins and bites the furniture, the dog isn't good with children, we have moved flat and there are no pets allowed. Must I continue?

I am not saying that in some cases there aren't genuine reasons for people that may no longer be able to home their pet, it's just that excuses are casually thrown around at the expectation that 'good' people like Dog's Trust will come along and pick up the pieces, It's just not fair. All I can say at this point, is thank god for people like Dog's Trust!

I really don't want to seem as though I am having a rant before the festive season, but I think it is about time that people truly took notice of flipping good slogans like 'A dog is for life, not just for Christmas' and have the confidence to shout it from the rooftops.

So, if you do find yourself being greeted with an excited wee and fluffy ears wrapped in a little pink bow this Christmas, look after your pooch, they will be your best friend, most loyal companion and beach buddy all year round.

Do Dogs Look Like Their Owners?

Have you ever wondered whether the never-ending conundrum, 'do dogs look like their owners' have any sort back bone? I have, and so has my colleague Sarah W.
Back in March when we both attending Crufts on behalf of The Woof Guide team, as you can imagine we were surrounded by large quantities of various breeds of dogs from British Bulldogs to Great Dane's and their owners. After four days of being surrounded by all shapes and sizes, we drew up the following conclusion, IT IS MOST DEFINITELY TRUE! Dogs do look like their owners.
I thought that I would do a little bit of research on the topic today and to see whether we had any support on the matter, and I was very surprised to discover how many stories and studies supported the diagnosis, including a study investigated by the yanks who make it 'official'- dogs do look like their owners.
But hold on a second, surely like myself, if you have a dog with a bit of a mixture a 'mongrel' if you will, such as my pooch Jed (collie cross springer spaniel), when I took him home as a pup I didn't really know what he would end up looking like. So how does that work?
Well it doesn't. In that respect the theory could be described as 'going to the dogs' so to speak, but when people select a purebred dog they are certainly 'barking up the right tree'.

As I cannot really compare myself to Jed, I thought I would show you all a picture of the very, highly attractive breed that Sarah W believes most resembles myself, a Curly Coated Retriever...

I chose an image of a puppy due to it's high rated 'cute' factor!

As for Sarah, I'm thinking an Irish Setter...?

Obviously I do appreciate that you may or not know what Sarah or myself for that matter look like to offer an opinion!

I am beginning to think that I may try this game at home over Christmas at some point, you know keep the family mood lightened and laughter rife!

Well, on that note I think I best stop there whilst I still have a job, as before you know it I will have teamed each member of the office with a random breed of dog and bound to end up offending some body (not intentionally of course) along the way!

This week I would like to draw your attention to another of our dog friendly properties located Llanllawddog, near Carmarthen which I think is just perfect for those many pooches that have a lot of energy to burn! So, if at home you have a bouncing boxer or a crazy collie, then please read on and see if Nantglas is just the property you have been looking for...

Nantglas, is set within the owners’ 35 acres of farm and parkland, situated in the bottom of a valley on the edge of the extensive Brechfa forest, with its myriad of footpaths to explore it is an ideal location for lovely walks with your dog.

At the property, sliding doors open onto a paved patio with steps up to the large, enclosed and lawned garden ideal for your pooch to play ball, chase his tail and if he is anything like my dog, chase bumble bees and wasps round and round in circles until he is dizzy!

As I appreciate that making sure you have places you are able to walk your dog nearby is probably one of the most important things on your check list, I will expand slightly on walking your dog in the Brechfa Forest, which is located around 20 minutes away from Nantglas.

Along most of the trails your pooch is more than welcome to join you as the majority are open access, just so long as they are kept under control at all times during your exploration.

As an example of what is on offfer:

Abergorlech is a delightful trail requiring moderate ability, and follows the River Gorlech along forestry roads before crossing a small bridge on to a footpath and climbing up hill through mature mixed broad leaf and coniferous woodland.

The walk has both short and long distance routes, which are complemented by an ever-changing woodland environment. The picnic area is the trails starting point and is also an ideal place in which to leave your car.

The trail is 2 miles long, and would take you around 1 1/2 hours to complete.

Just a quick little note to state the obvious, please make sure that suitable footwear is worn as the trails can become slippery in adverse weather conditions! So in other words, please leave your heels behind ladies!

Hello everyone, Puzzle (dog ambassadress) here!

I've just returned home from another fantastic holiday in St Dogmaels. I've been on lots of lovely walks. My favourite place is Poppit Sands, but I could also go on the beaches at Cwm-yr-Eglwys and Pwllgwaelod. My owners took me to the top of Dinas Head - I walked really well on my lead - no pulling, even though I could have run up much quicker than them!

We had beautiful weather, except for a couple of days, but luckily "The White Hart" in St. Dogmaels lets me sit inside. I was made to feel really welcome there and got given snacks while my owners had their dinner (very nice too, so they tell me). I can't wait to go on holiday again.

My owners said because I behaved so well, and worked so hard as an ambassadress, they'll take me next year!

Doggie Delights!

I would like to take this opportunity to pay extra special attention to two properties located in Ceibwr Bay that have many doggie delights to offer you during your stay with us in Pembrokeshire.

Sharing the same location, Ger y Llyn (sleeping 3) and Fron Haul (sleeping 4) are surrounded by 5.5 acres of open paddock and pasture land, enabling your pooch to explore and play ball with the freedom of being off the lead. Being a dog owner myself, I can appreciate how tiresome keeping your dog constantly on a lead can become, and so to hear that at either property your dog can enjoy being free by taking numerous bounds around the large paddock is heavenly music to my ears!

My dog is certainly one for dipping in the sea and chasing his tail on the sand, and if yours has a personality similar to Jed, Ger y Llyn and Fron Haul is only a 10 minute walk from the attractive Ceibwr Bay. Not only have you the convenience of the beach nearby, but the owner of the properties will provide a 'doggie towel' for your dog to dry off after his time dipping in the sea!

Ceibwr Bay is dog friendly all year round, and so whether you are visiting during the Winter or Summer months, you are able to bring your pooch along for a sandy day out with the rest of the family!

There are also local pubs nearby that are welcoming of your four legged friend, such as White Hart Inn, St Dogmaels and The Salutation Inn, Felindre Farchog. Both offering pub grub and of course, alcoholic refreshment!

And yes, there is one more doggie delight to make these properties even more well worth the visit in the way of scrumptious home cooked meals delivered to right to your Cottage door! By request, the owner will cook a superb meal for you at an extra charge, that will be brought to you in the comfort of your cosy Cottage. Your dog can relax laying by your side for the evening, and after Dinner choose from the owner's fantastic DVD library!

Discover Dogs

As you may or may not be aware, over this weekend, the 8th and 9th of November Earls Court 2, London becomes host to 'Discover Dogs', and Coastal Cottages will be there to revel in the doggie atmosphere! If you happen to be making an appearance there yourself, then let's play hide and seek and see whether you can spot either Mel, Rona or Linda who will be the faces attending to represent the Coastal team! They would all be delighted to provide you with their fountains of knowledge in regards to our Dog Friendly Holidays in Pembrokeshire, where you and your pooch can enjoy many doggie delights that we have to offer you all.

To give you all a little background for those who are a little vague, Discover Dogs is successfully organized by The Kennel Club in association with Royal Canin to bring you over 200 breeds of handsome beast, and this year celebrates it's 13th year. Discover Dogs prides itself in teaching the many that attend each year the pleasures of canine companionship, canine care, promoting responsible dog ownership and the wondrous talents of man's best friend.

There is one aspect of these tremendous attractions that never fail to amaze me, and that is the natural talent the dog's expose within the Agility programme and the dedication of both owner and pooch to succeed as a team, it is truly fascinating. Jumping hurdles, creeping through tunnels and weaving around poles, whilst being surrounded with many glued faces and bright colours has got to take some doing.

I remember when I was a little younger going around in circles with my little pooch in my garden, with brooms and plastic chairs as hurdles, gravy bones as a treat for Jed (my dog) and a large glass of orange squash for me! I was shattered afterwards, but it was well worth the giggle. But bless him, he really is an intelligent little fella and did well. The Border Collie in him must provide the intelligence, and the Springer Spaniel is responsible for the spotty nose and paws and the not so intelligent side! Just imagine that if we had taken it more seriously and developed outside of my garden, you could be watching me and Jed this weekend! Because at this point I feel the need to show off my gorgeous pooch, I have teamed this entry with a lovely snap of him for you all to peruse!

I am writing today in regards to two fantastic dog friendly properties located in Nevern.
Coed Cadw shares a hushed and sedate location with adjoining Coed Cadw Farmhouse surrounded by many green fields. Both built with traditional stone set in the pretty Nevern Valley, just outside the village of Felindre Farchog. Ideal for dogs who love playing in the sand and splashing in the sea, as only 5 minutes away you will discover the dog friendly delights of Newport Sands and Newport Parrog.

In looking through both of the properties Guest Book’s, I have found some terrific comments from guests that have stayed with us this year that I felt deserved to be shared with you all.

Coed Cadw:

Lovely and clean, warm and comfortable. The Salutation Inn is welcoming and accept dogs in bar. Good selection of food and real ale. Enjoyed stay. Holmes, Llangadog.

Very relaxing and homely. Recommend Ceibwr Cove, Nr Moylegrove. Good food at Salutation pub, 5 minutes walk down the road, but recommend taking a torch at night for walking down there! Sam and Morgan Evans, Surrey.

Coed Cadw Farmhouse:

A lovely, cosy Cottage. We have been made to feel very welcome and having the pleasure of meeting the owner.
We enjoyed walking towards Nevern, along the path beside The Salutation Inn. Favourite beach has been Penbryn; great walk down the wooded valley to the beach with a stream to mess around in at the bottom, lots of unspoilt beach and caves.
Fronlas Cafe in Newport is great if you have children and dogs as they welcome both. Even if it is raining, the dog is allowed inside and even gets biscuits for themselves!

My Trip To Lydstep, South Wales.

Hi there, my name is Molly the dog (aged 18 months) and it seemed like an age since my last holiday when I went to the Isle of Wight. In fact, dad reckons it has only been 9 months, but I've worked it out to be 63!!!! And boy…. was I ready for a holiday!!!! It's a hard life you know being an 'only dog', the executive stress of going to the office once a week, being waited on hand and foot, and having more fuss than you could shake a stick at!

Now, I've not heard much about Cottage Holidays in Wales. My Pembrokeshire Corgi buddy, Peggy, tells me that it's a great place, but does suffer from dreary weather and has got the odd dragon lurking around in dark hidden places. Unsure of what a dragon was I asked wise old Jack whilst chasing the ball his owner had thrown for him. "Morning Molly, I hear you're off on holiday again?" "Yeah, I can't wait." I replied as the ball bounced over the park bench and into a bush. "Jack…" I said inquisitively, "…..what's a dragon?" Jack froze and the recently retrieved ball fell from his slobbery jaws. "A dragon my friend, is like the biggest dog you have ever seen… red in colour and scaley to the touch. It barks with smoke and growls with fire… you won't find them here…" "But Peggy told me that they have them in Wales?" "Not any more… but be careful of caves… something may have survived…" And with that he was gone.

I plodded back to mum and dad who attached my lead and took me home. I leapt straight into the boot and went on Dragon Patrol. However, I was bored of that by the time we'd got out of Nottingham so I barked at a man on a motorbike then went to sleep. After what seemed like forever, the handbrake clicked, then engine stopped and the doors opened. I peered out of the boot to make sure that there were no mythical beasts and leapt out to have a sniff around. It was raining, and it was far colder than it should have been in July. I could smell the sea air and hear waves crashing against rocks so I knew that the coast wasn't far away. I raced into the cottage to check out my home for the next few days.

It was really spacious and everything smelt very new. There was a choice of about 5 beds and plenty of seats in the lounge so I was very excited. (Unfortunately dad made me sleep on my own bed.) I did have to be careful with my muddy paws as much of the flooring was light in colour. I put my special towel by the door for a quick wipe before entering. It was late by the time we arrived as the journey took much longer than expected so we had a quick walk around the quiet village of Lydstep before heading back home for some well earned rest.

Two days later... My Summary

Well after two days away I would recommend south wales, Tenby in particular as it is a very pretty place with some excellent beaches and a good range of attractions and places to visit. Most of the beaches have dog friendly areas but you must keep your lead on when walking the coastal walks and paths. Peggy the Corgi would have enjoyed it as she is happy to plod along and isn't too fussed about exercise.If you live near to Tenby it makes a great trip away and there is plenty of Holiday Accommodation in Tenby.

I give Lydstep a big 'Paws Up'. It was a very enjoyable weekend and I loved the boat trip. I might see about taking a friend with me next time. Oh and don't forget, if you do take your owners there, it may be worth putting some early training in, just incase you come across a Welsh dragon!!!
